Historic Ships Series
This series explores historic vessels preserved across Germany and Europe, from steamships, tugboats and fireboats to various working vessels. It examines their roles in the development of port cities, the evolution of maritime technology and the long-term preservation of maritime heritage.
Combining historical research with fieldwork, the series documents each vessel’s construction, technical characteristics, service history and preservation. Museum visits, onboard observations and sailing experiences provide additional perspectives on how working vessels become living cultural heritage.
Beyond the ships themselves, the series explores how preservation, restoration and continued operation help transmit shipbuilding craftsmanship, maritime knowledge and the collective memory of port communities across generations.
