一艘船的背后,
往往站着比船更多的人。

这是这次北德田野里,
让我走得最辛苦的一座博物馆。

不是因为展品太少,
恰恰相反。

从汉萨同盟的柯格船,
到现代造船工业;
从焊接钢板的工人,
到改变世界贸易的货轮,
展厅里的展品太丰富、故事太多。

我不断在展厅里寻找。
寻找船,
寻找港口,
寻找航海,
也寻找这座博物馆真正想讲述的故事。

直到整理照片时,
我才慢慢明白。

汉萨商船、
放样楼、
焊接车间、
工会报纸、
移民工人与船厂历史,
原来都在讲同一件事。

船会离开船厂,
驶向海洋。
而那些让船诞生的人,
留了下来。

每一艘船的船底,
都藏着一座看不见的工厂。

一、汉萨船为什么没有消失

有些船沉入河底,
有些船驶进记忆。

1.一艘从河底回来的船

走进德国航海博物馆之后,
最先看见的,
是一艘来自十四世纪的柯格船(Kogge)。

它曾经航行于北海与波罗的海之间,
穿越汉萨同盟的贸易网络,
将货物、商人与消息带往不同港口。

六百多年后,
它被发现于威悉河河床之中。

船体已经残缺,
桅杆与风帆早已消失,
只剩下一具巨大的木质骨架。

站在它面前时,
我原本以为,
这只是一个关于考古发现的故事。

后来才发现,
这艘船真正令人惊讶的地方,
并不是它如何被发现,
而是它从来没有真正离开过。

2. 船离开了海洋

离开柯格船展区之后,
我又一次看见了它。

在明信片上,
在邮票上,
在纪念章上,
在糖果盒上,
在啤酒杯上。

仿佛这艘船离开海洋之后,
又以另一种方式继续存在。

展厅里展示的许多物件,
已经不是中世纪遗物。

它们属于十九世纪、
二十世纪,
甚至属于今天。

但无论年代如何变化,
人们总喜欢反覆描绘同一种船:
高高的船楼,
鼓起的风帆,
厚重而结实的船身。

3. 北德人的汉萨记忆

船已经沉没,
货物已经消失,
航线也早已改变。

但关于这艘船的记忆,
却仍然留在人们的生活里。

六百年前,

六百年后,
它连接的,
则是北德人对于过去的集体记忆。

船沉了。
但人们需要它继续浮着。

二、钢铁是怎么变成船的| 船如何被造出来

船不是从海上开始的,
它从图纸开始。

1. 从图纸到船体

如果说汉萨船讲述的是船离开港口之后的故事,
那么这一部分讲述的,
则是一艘船下水之前的故事。

在电脑尚未普及的年代,
造船师必须先在放样楼(Schnürboden)里工作。
工程师绘制完成的图纸,
无法直接交给工人施工。

他们需要按照真实尺寸,
将船体轮廓画在地面上,
再制作各种样板与模板。
这些模板随后被送往不同车间,
成为船体制造的依据。

2. 从木头到钢铁

几千年来,
木材一直是最重要的造船材料。

从渔船、
商船,
到横渡海洋的远洋帆船,
都由木头建造而成。

随着工业时代到来,
钢铁逐渐取代木材。

更大的船体、
更重的货物、
更长的航程,
让钢铁成为新的选择。

后来,
铝合金与玻璃纤维也加入造船行业。

不同材料对应不同需求,
也代表着不同年代对于海洋的理解。

从木头到钢铁,
从钢铁到现代复合材料,
改变的不只是船体,
也是人类与海洋相处的方式。

3. 把钢板变成船

材料进入船厂之后,
真正的挑战才刚刚开始。

钢板必须经过切割、
运输、
组装与连接,
才能逐渐形成船体。

过去,
工人使用铆钉将钢板固定在一起。
后来,
焊接逐渐取代铆接。

展厅里展示的工具与设备,
让人能够想象当年的船厂景象。

火花四射的焊接车间,
震耳欲聋的敲击声,
以及日复一日重复进行的体力劳动。

现代造船则更像大型积木工程:
船头、
船尾与船身,
往往在不同区域分别完成,
最后再组合成完整船体。
展厅里的模型清楚展示了这种过程。

原来一艘巨大的船,
并不是一次完成的。
它是无数零件、
无数工序、
无数人的工作成果。

船从图纸开始,
从钢板开始,
从铆钉和焊枪开始。
它被看见了,
才成为船。

4. 船下水的那一天

在船舶建造过程中,
龙骨安放被视为最重要的时刻之一。
龙骨是船体最早安装的重要构件,
象征一艘船正式开始建造。

展柜中保存着龙骨安放铭牌与幸运硬币。
按照传统,
工人会在船体下方放置硬币,
祈求工程顺利完成。
这种仪式有些像建筑物的奠基典礼。
从这一刻开始,
一艘船便拥有了自己的名字、
编号与命运。

真正的高潮发生在下水当天。
船体沿着倾斜船台缓缓滑向海面,
巨大的重量全部集中在船身上。
稍有误差,
船体便可能倾覆。
因此下水不仅是技术操作,
也是整座造船厂最紧张的时刻。

三、造船的人

船会留下名字,
造船的人往往不会。

1. 一艘船需要多少人

这里讨论的,
则是那些让船得以诞生的人。

从设计图纸开始,
到切割钢板、
焊接船体、
安装设备与最后下水,
一艘船往往需要许多人共同参与。

有人负责计算,
有人负责焊接,
有人负责吊装,
有人负责动力系统,
有人负责最后的检查。

当船完成之后,
所有人的工作都会隐藏在钢板之后。
人们记住了船名,
却很少记住造船的人。

2. 船厂里的劳动世界

十九世纪以来,
德国北部港口逐渐发展出庞大的造船工业。
船厂不仅生产船舶,
也聚集了大量工人。

他们在船台、
车间与码头工作,
生活与工作世界就此形成。

随着工业化发展,
工人开始成立工会,
争取工资、
工时与劳动条件。
因此造船业的发展史,
不仅是技术史,
也是劳动史。

3. 不同的人走进船厂

船厂又面对新的劳动力问题。

经济快速发展,
需要越来越多人进入船厂。
于是来自其他国家的移民工人,
也成为德国造船业的一部分。

不同语言、
不同背景的人,
共同参与同一艘船的建造。

后来,
女性也开始进入过去主要由男性主导的造船行业。
展板中特别提到,
当时甚至专门设计了适合女性使用的焊工工作服。

这些变化说明,
造船不只是技术的发展,
也是社会的发展。

4. 造船中心东移

二十世纪后期开始,
世界造船中心逐渐向亚洲移动。
韩国、
中国等国家迅速崛起,
成为新的造船大国。

许多德国船厂关闭、合并,
或转向高技术领域。
今天德国仍然建造船舶,
但重点已经不再是大量生产的商船,
而是研究船、
特种船、
高技术工程船以及相关研发。

船厂依然存在,
只是承担着不同的任务。

这里展示的不只是船。
第一章讲的是记忆,
第二章讲的是制造,
而这一章讲的,
是那些让船得以诞生的人。

船会老去,
会报废,
甚至沉入海底。
但每一艘船上,
都留下过无数人的劳动痕迹。

我以为这是一座关于船的博物馆。
后来才发现,
它讲的不只是船。

从汉萨同盟时代的柯格船,
到现代造船工业;
从船体设计、
材料与建造过程,
到工人、
工会、
移民工人与产业转型,
船始终存在。

只是每一个时代关心的问题都不一样。
汉萨时代的人关心如何穿越北海与波罗的海,
工业时代的人关心如何建造更大的船,
而今天的人们,
则开始思考造船业如何在全球竞争中继续生存。

离开展厅之后,
我走向港区,
登上停泊在水边的 Seefalke

德国航海博物馆保存的并不只是过去。
从柯格船到钢铁船,
从造船厂到港口,
从展厅里的模型到眼前真实停泊的船舶,
海洋上的故事,
其实一直都还在继续。

博物馆里的船已经成为历史,
而港口里的船仍在等待下一次航行。

船不会忘记它从哪里来。
即使它已经不记得造船的人。

后记|考烈王、黄歇与令尹夫人的观后感

离开博物馆之后,
三人又登上停泊在港区的 Seefalke。

穿过甲板,
沿着楼梯向下,
巨大的发动机顿时出现在眼前。

黄歇看了许久,
说道:
“我原本以为,
这里讲的是船。
后来发现,
这里也讲的是造船的人。
如今再看这些机器,
才知道今日的船,
已经和楚国完全不同了。”

考烈王点了点头,

说道:
“可有一件事,
一直没有变。”

黄歇问道:

“下水典礼。”

人们仍会为船举行典礼。”

考烈王说道:
“楚国新船下水之前,
也会祭祀天地,
选择时日。
看来东西方都一样。”

黄歇望着远处港口,
说道:
“船会改变。
造船的方法会改变。
但人们总希望它平安启航,
平安归来。”

三人站在甲板上,
海风吹过港口。

身后是六百多年前的柯格船,
眼前是仍在航行的 Seefalke。

两千多年过去了,
船变了。

人们送船出海的心情,
却没有变。

船会回来。
有些人,
不会。

Appendix|English Narrative Overview

The People Who Build Ships | German Maritime Museum, Bremerhaven

Ships are remembered by name. The people who built them rarely are.

This was the hardest museum to walk through during my entire North German fieldwork — not because there was too little to see, but because there was too much. From the Hanseatic cog to modern shipbuilding, from welders to the cargo vessels that reshaped world trade, I kept searching the galleries for the ship, the port, the voyage — the story this museum was actually trying to tell. It wasn’t until I was sorting through my photographs afterward that it came together: the Hanseatic ship, the lofting floor, the welding workshop, the union newspapers, the migrant workers, the shipyard’s history — they were all telling the same story. A ship leaves the yard and sails out to sea. The people who made it possible stay behind.

The first thing visitors encounter is a fourteenth-century cog — a Kogge — once sailed between the North Sea and the Baltic through the Hanseatic trading network, carrying goods, merchants, and news between ports. More than six hundred years later, it was recovered from the bed of the Weser River, its hull incomplete, mast and sail long gone, leaving only a massive wooden skeleton. I assumed, at first, this was simply an archaeology story. What actually surprised me wasn’t how the ship was found — it was that it had never really left.

I kept encountering it again after leaving the cog exhibit: on postcards, stamps, medals, candy tins, beer mugs. As though the ship, once out of the water, had found another way to keep existing. Many of the objects on display weren’t medieval relics at all — they belonged to the nineteenth century, the twentieth, even today. But across every era, people kept drawing the same silhouette: tall stern castles, billowing sails, a thick, sturdy hull. Repeated for centuries, the cog stopped being simply a cargo vessel or a merchant’s means of transport. It became a symbol — of Hanseatic prosperity, of the connection between the North Sea and the Baltic, of a shared history claimed by cities across northern Germany. The ship sank. The cargo disappeared. The trade routes changed entirely. But the memory of that ship stayed embedded in daily life. Six hundred years ago, it connected two seas. Six hundred years later, it connects northern Germans to their own past.

If the cog told the story of a ship after it left port, the next section told the story of everything that happens before a ship ever touches water. Before computers, shipbuilders worked in a Schnürboden — a lofting floor — where engineers’ drawings had to be translated into full-scale outlines chalked directly onto the floor, then converted into templates sent out to different workshops as the basis for construction. Standing before those hull curves, I understood: a ship doesn’t begin at the bow. Long before any steel is cut, it already exists inside a designer’s mind. Shipbuilding is the process of turning an idea into something heavy enough to cross an ocean.

For millennia, wood was the primary shipbuilding material — fishing boats, merchant vessels, ocean-going sailing ships, all built from timber. Industrialization brought steel, better suited to larger hulls, heavier cargo, and longer voyages; later, aluminum and fiberglass entered the trade as well. Each material reflected a different era’s relationship with the sea.

Once material reached the yard, the real challenge began: cutting, transporting, assembling, and joining steel plate into a hull. Riveting gradually gave way to welding. The tools on display — sparks flying, deafening hammer strikes, the same physical labor repeated day after day — bring the old shipyard back to life. Modern shipbuilding looks more like large-scale modular construction: bow, stern, and midsection often built separately before final assembly, as the museum’s models clearly demonstrate. A great ship is never finished in a single pass. It’s the accumulated work of countless parts, countless processes, countless people.

Keel-laying is considered one of the most important moments in a ship’s construction — the keel being the first major component installed, marking the formal start of building. Display cases preserve keel plaques and lucky coins, following the tradition of placing coins beneath the hull for good fortune, not unlike a building’s foundation ceremony. From that moment on, a ship has a name, a hull number, a fate of its own.

The true climax comes on launch day, as the hull slides down an inclined slipway into open water, its entire weight briefly balanced on a single structure — the smallest miscalculation could capsize it. Naming ceremonies typically precede launch, most commonly involving breaking a bottle of champagne or sparkling wine against the bow; the naming mallets on display are relics of exactly that tradition. Once struck, the restraints release, and the ship begins its slide into the sea — no longer a shipyard project, but a real ship at last. These ceremonies often carried political and social weight too, with dignitaries or public figures serving as godmothers or sponsors — a tradition that continues today, still bringing together shipping companies, financial institutions, and political figures for a shared public occasion. To an observer, it’s a celebration. To me, it looked more like the ending of a long labor — because by the time a ship touches water, countless people have already left their time and effort embedded in it.

The final section turns to the people who make a ship possible at all — designers, welders, crane operators, propulsion engineers, final inspectors. Once a ship is complete, all of that labor disappears behind steel plate. People remember the ship’s name. Rarely do they remember who built it.

Since the nineteenth century, Germany’s northern ports developed into a massive shipbuilding industry, drawing enormous numbers of workers into slipways, workshops, and docks — an entire working world built alongside the ships themselves. As industrialization advanced, workers organized unions to fight for wages, hours, and conditions, making shipbuilding’s history as much a labor history as a technical one.

The shipyard never asked where a worker came from — only what their hands could do. During wartime, many yards relied on forced labor; in peacetime, new labor shortages brought migrant workers from other countries into German shipbuilding, different languages and backgrounds contributing to the same hull. Later, women entered a trade long dominated by men — the exhibit notes that welding overalls were eventually designed specifically to fit them. Shipbuilding’s story was never only a story of technology. It was a story of social change too.

Since the late twentieth century, the global center of shipbuilding has shifted toward Asia, as South Korea, China, and others rose rapidly to dominance. Many German shipyards closed, merged, or pivoted toward high-technology work — research vessels, specialized ships, advanced engineering craft, and related development, rather than mass commercial shipbuilding. The yards are still there. Their purpose has simply changed.

Leaving the exhibition, I walked toward the harbor and boarded the Seefalke, moored at the water’s edge. The German Maritime Museum doesn’t only preserve the past. From the Hanseatic cog to steel ships, from the shipyard to the port, from museum models to a vessel still floating right in front of me — the story of the sea, it turns out, has never actually stopped.

Across Civilizations

Leaving the museum, the three of us climbed aboard the Seefalke, moored in the harbor. Crossing the deck and descending a stairway, an enormous engine suddenly came into view.

Lord Chunshen Huang Xie studied it for a long while. “I thought this museum told the story of ships. It turns out it also tells the story of the people who built them. Looking at these machines now, I can see how completely different today’s ships are from anything Chu ever knew.”

King Kaolie nodded. “Wood became steel. And the ship became this.”

I smiled. “There’s one thing, though, that hasn’t changed at all.”

“What’s that?” Huang Xie asked.

“The launch ceremony.”

Both of them paused, surprised.

Huang Xie laughed. “So even two thousand years later, people still hold ceremonies for a ship.”

King Kaolie said, “Before launching a new ship, Chu also made offerings to heaven and earth, and chose an auspicious day. It seems East and West aren’t so different after all.”

Huang Xie looked out toward the harbor. “Ships change. The methods of building them change. But people always hope for the same thing — that it sets out safely, and comes home safely.”

The three of us stood on deck as the harbor wind blew past.

Behind us, a cog more than six hundred years old. Ahead of us, the Seefalke, still sailing today.

Two thousand years have passed. Ships have changed completely.

But the feeling people carry, sending a ship out to sea — that has never changed at all.

Ships come home. Some people don’t.
