As the Suzhou–Hangzhou intercity line races past, the soft, “water-polished” timbre of Kunqu rises, like the echo of an old dream, resonating with modern velocity beyond the window. Suzhou’s geography nurtured Kunqu’s winding melodies and has borne, for a thousand years, the Chinese pursuit of beauty, ideal, and self-inquiry.
