This piece follows the story of “Xuanzang and sandalwood,” setting out from Tang Chang’an, crossing deserts, snow ranges, and seas of sand to ancient India. With fifty thousand li on foot, Xuanzang became a bridge of civilization; sandalwood journeyed with him, soothing the heart. Today, the Xi’an–Lanzhou high-speed rail flies for a thousand miles, linking Xi’an and Lanzhou. Across the centuries, a thread of fragrance still whispers over the earth. Threaded by ambergris, this essay links the great treasure ships of the Ming to modern rails, exploring how a mysterious scent from the deep ocean sailed back from Arabia, released itself quietly at Quanzhou Harbor, and drifted into today’s Quanzhou Station.
