Su Dongpo (Su Shi) was a towering literary figure of the Song dynasty, masterful in poetry, prose, calligraphy, and painting. Despite political upheavals and repeated exiles, he produced immortal works such as Ode to the Red Cliffs and Prelude to Water Melody. Lines like “With one cape I face the wind and rain all my life” and “Where my heart is at peace, there is my home” reveal his open-hearted outlook. Whether farming in Huangzhou, dredging West Lake, or banished to Danzhou, he found joy amid adversity and left cultural legacies—including the famed “Dongpo pork.” His spirit and writings have resonated for a millennium; according to widely cited accounts, in 2000 he was named among the “Heroes of the Millennium” by Le Monde.
