A wisp of ocean-borne spiral-shell incense rises across a thousand years, unfurling beside Huang Tingjian’s inkstone. Once a putrefying carapace, through curing and fire it is transfigured into an aroma that kindles the poet’s soul. Along the poetic paths of southern Jiangxi, he sits before the censer, writing of earthly austerity and unwavering integrity. Today, riding the Shanghai–Kunming high-speed railway from Hangzhou to Nanchang, we traverse not only distance but a deeper dialogue between poetry and scent. The shell is thin, yet the fragrance endures—walk with Huang Tingjian and taste the millennium of verse distilled in spiral-shell incense.
